Cosmetology License Renewal Overview

Note: Continuing Education (CE) providers have seven days to report CE hours to TDLR. If you do not see your CE and seven days have passed since you completed the course, please contact the course provider.


Before You Renew

  • Name Changes –  Did you change your name?
    • Email a written request to CS.Cosmetologists@tdlr.texas.gov. Be sure to include:
      1. the changes to your name;
      2. your license number; and
      3. a copy of a government-issued ID (driver’s license or state issued ID) or a legal document approving/indicating your last name change, such as a marriage license, court petition for name change, or certificate of naturalization.
    • For changes to your first name, attach a copy of a court petition for name change or certificate of naturalization in addition to a government issued ID.
  • Update Your Mailing Address
  • Social Security Number – Do you need to add your social security number? Note: You need a social security number to renew online.
    • Email a written request to CS.Cosmetologists@tdlr.texas.gov. Be sure to include:
      1. your license number;
      2. a copy of your social security card; and
      3. a copy of a government-issued ID (driver’s license, state issued ID, passport or certificate of naturalization).

My license expires within the next five days. What should I do?

Please send an email to help@tdlr.texas.gov with:

  • name
  • license number
  • phone number
  • Subject line, “Renewal within 5 days”

I accidentally answered the criminal history question incorrectly on my renewal. How do I change my answer?

Send an email to CS.Cosmetologists@tdlr.texas.gov with your license number and the change to your criminal history answer.

Do I need my social security number to renew online?

Yes, you need the last four digits of your social security number to renew online.

How do I renew my license if I don’t have a social security number?

Please email help@tdlr.texas.gov with a detailed description and the subject line “Renewal with no SSN” to request a renewal form by mail.

How do I renew by mail?

Please email help@tdlr.texas.gov with a detailed description and the subject line “Renewal by mail.”

I have not received my license within 14 days after my license was issued. What should I do?

Please verify your renewal is complete. If your new expiration date appears on our website and you have not received your license, please send a detailed email with your license number and mailing address to CS.Cosmetologists@tdlr.texas.gov.

I paid the renewal fee over a year ago but did not complete my continuing education. What should I do?

Renewal fees expire after one year and are not refundable or transferrable. Please send an email with your license number to CS.Cosmetologists@tdlr.texas.gov and request that we mail a new renewal form to you. If your license expired less than three years ago, you can renew by completing your continuing education, submitting your renewal form by mail, and sending a money order or cashier’s check for the fee and late fee.

How can I reinstate my license if it expired over three years ago?

If you do not meet all renewal requirements (including fees and continuing education) within three years you must apply for a new license and take the required exams again. Use the COS021 Expired Cosmetology License Application to start your application process. Exam information

What should I do if I have been incarcerated since my last renewal?

Your license is revoked automatically if you’re incarcerated following a felony conviction, felony community supervision revocation, revocation of parole, or revocation of mandatory supervision. See License Eligibility for Persons with Criminal Convictions. If eligible, you may be able to re-apply and retest to have your license reinstated.
