Note A17.1A-197 change reference to smoke detector to fire alarm initiating device deferring NFPA 72 to determine the type of device. NFPA 72-1996 (3.8.14.3) prohibits smoke detectors in elevator hoistways except where sprinklers are in the top of the hoistway. A17.1b-1998 requires the visual signal to illuminate intermittently when the fire alarm initiating device in the associated machine room is activated.
