Summary of Proposed Rule Changes

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation proposes changes to the rules at 16 TAC, Chapter 73, Electricians.

What are the proposed rule changes?

The proposed rule changes:

  • Reduce the number of credits, from four to three, that an electrical career and technical education (CTE) program must require students to earn in a practicum.
  • A practicum is an educational course through which a student obtains academic credit for performing work outside of a school setting. Under 16 T.A.C. §73.110(b)(4), schools offering CTE programs must require students to obtain practicum credit by working outside of the classroom under the supervision of a licensed master electrician.
  • This change is necessary to address concerns raised by public high schools that student schedules could accommodate three practicum credits, but not four.
