Hybrid Parent-Taught Driver Education
Parent-taught driver education students and instructors have the option of completing the classroom hours at a driving school or through a public high-school, which allows parent-instructors to teach only the in-car driving portion of instruction.
Instructor Eligibility and Approval
If you have not already confirmed your eligibility to become a parent-instructor and participate as an instructor, please see the How to Become a Parent-Taught Driver Education Instructor page.
Enroll with a Driving School
Find a licensed driver education school that you want to attend that offers a 32-hour course. You can either take an online or in-person course.
Contact the school before registering and let them know that you only want to take the classroom portion. Be sure to agree on any costs before you register.
Transferring Hours
After the student has completed classroom instruction at the driving school, you should contact the school and identify yourself as the person who will be acting as instructor of the parent-taught course.
Request that the driver education school transfer the classroom hours to you.
The school will request specific information about you, so be sure to have all information related to your instructor designation that you received from TDLR.
Proceed with In-Car Instruction
After the classroom instruction hours have been transferred to you, you can proceed with the in-car driving instruction.
For more information on getting a learner license, completing the in-car driving hours, and applying for a provisional license, see the Getting Started with Parent-Taught Driver Education page.
