Athletic Trainers Examination Requirements
Jurisprudence Exam
The Texas Athletic Trainer Jurisprudence Examination content is based on the state laws, rules, and regulations relating to the practice of athletic trainers.
The jurisprudence examination is required for all new applicants seeking to obtain an athletic trainer license. The issuance date of the jurisprudence certificate must not be more than six months prior to the license application submittal date.
The fee for the Jurisprudence exam is $35, payable to eStrategy Solutions, Inc.
The jurisprudence exam must be completed within 30 days of paying the exam registration fee. After 30 days, your fee and registration will expire and your exam will be invalidated. To take the jurisprudence exam again, you will need to re-register and pay a new fee.
NOTE: If you took the DSHS jurisprudence exam to receive your initial license, you will not need to retake it.

Written and Practical Exams
TDLR has contracted third party vendor, PSI, to develop and administer examinations for the Athletic Trainer Program. For information about the PSI testing program or, if you are eligible, to register, go to https://test-takers.psiexams.com/tdlr.
Written Exam
You must pass the jurisprudence exam before being approved to take the written exam.
After submitting your application, TDLR staff will verify that you meet all eligibility requirements. Upon confirmation, you will receive an eligibility email notice from PSI. The email includes instructions for registering for a written examination and scheduling an examination.
You should review the Candidate Information Bulletin (PDF) which provides helpful information about the exam content (including the passing score, the number of questions, the time allotted to complete the exam, and a list of reference materials), fees, exam site locations, and detailed information about PSI’s examination administration procedures.
Re-Taking the Written Exam
If you fail the written exam, You may schedule a retake with TDLR's third-party vendor, PSI, within 24-48 hours of your failed exam. There is no limit to the number of times you can retake the written exam.
Practical Exam
You must pass the written exam before taking the practical exam.
After submitting your application, TDLR staff will verify that you meet all eligibility requirements. Upon confirmation, you will receive an eligibility email notice from PSI. The email includes instructions for registering for a practical examination and scheduling an examination.
