Dyslexia Therapists and Practitioners Continuing Education

After October 3, 2016, the requirements will remain the same for the renewal of a dyslexia therapist or practitioner license. Licensees are required to complete 20 hours of continuing education during each 2-year license period.

Continuing Education course content needs to include one or more of the following:

  • Basic language and or learning disorders
  • Applied multisensory practice and methodology
  • Curricula in academic language therapy
  • Related research in medicine, psychology, education or linguistics
  • Professional practice including relevant laws, rules, or ethics

Continuing education programs which include applied multisensory practice and methodology or curricula in academic language therapy will be accepted if the program is offered or approved by the Academic Language Therapy Association.

The licensee is responsible for maintaining a record of his or her continuing education experiences or certificates. If a licensee is selected for audit, then the licensee will be notified and records will be required to be submitted to the Department.

Yes, continuing education programs which include applied multisensory practice and methodology or curricula in academic language therapy will be accepted if the program is offered or approved by the Academic Language Therapy Association.

5. How does the audit process work for continuing education?

The Department shall select a random sample of license holders for each renewal month. If selected for an audit, the licensee will be notified when they receive their renewal notice. The licensee will be required to submit copies of certificates, transcripts or other documentation to verify the licensee's attendance, participation and completion of continuing education requirements. Licenses will not be renewed until continuing education requirements have been met.
