Dyslexia Therapy Continuing Education
License Renewal Requirements
To be eligible to renew your license, you must complete 20 hours of continuing education during each 2-year license period.
The human trafficking training course required for license renewal may count for up to one hour of continuing education credit.
If you are ALTA certified, you may use the same continuing education hours for your ALTA certification and your Texas dyslexia license.
Acceptable Activities
The following types of continuing education activities are acceptable for license renewal, providing that they meet the requirements for acceptable subject matter.
- Academic courses at a regionally accredited college or university
- In-service educational programs, training programs, institutes, seminars, workshops and conferences
- Instructing or presenting education programs or activities at an academic course, in-service educational programs, training programs, institutes, seminars, workshops and conferences not to exceed 5 clock-hours each continuing education period
- Publishing a book or an article in a peer review journal not to exceed 5 clock-hours each continuing education period
- Successful completion of a self-study program, not to exceed 10 clock-hours each continuing education period
Acceptable Subject Matter
Continuing Education course content needs to include one or more of the following:
- Basic language and or learning disorders
- Applied multisensory practice and methodology
- Curricula in academic language therapy
- Related research in medicine, psychology, education or linguistics
- Professional practice including relevant laws, rules, or ethics
Continuing education programs which include applied multisensory practice and methodology or curricula in academic language therapy will be accepted if the program is offered or approved by the Academic Language Therapy Association.
Continuing Education Experience Credits
Accredited Colleges and Universities
Courses completed through an accredited college or university will be credited at the rate of 10 continuing education hours for each semester hour successfully completed.
For example, a 3-semester hour course would count as 30-hours of continuing education.
You will be required to retain a certificate of successful completion or official transcript as proof of credit, which may be requested by the department if you are selected for audit.
Multisensory Practice or Academic Language Therapy
Parts of programs that contain applied multisensory practice and methodology or curricula in academic language therapy will be credited on a 1-for-1 basis with 1 continuing education hour for each clock-hour spent in the continuing education experience.
Continuing education programs in these areas must be offered or approved by the Academic Language Therapy Association.
As proof of credit, you will be required to retain a certificate of completion or attendance issued by the approved sponsoring organization of the course. If you are selected for audit, the certificate(s) may be requested by the department as proof of completion.
A clock-hour is defined as 50 minutes of attendance and participation in an acceptable continuing education experience.
Publishing a Book or an Article in a Peer Review Journal
You will be required to retain a copy of the publication as proof of credit, which may be requested by the department if you are selected for audit.
A clock-hour is defined as 50 minutes of participation in activities related to the research, writing, editing and publishing of an article.
Activities of this type may not exceed 5 clock-hours each continuing education period.
Self-Study Program
As proof of credit, you will be required to retain a certificate of completion issued by the sponsoring organization of the self-study program. The department may request a copy of the certificate(s) if you are selected for audit.
A clock-hour is defined as 50 minutes of attendance and participation in a self-study program.
Activities of this type may not exceed 10 clock-hours each continuing education period.
Reporting Completed Courses
You do not need to report completed courses to the department unless you are selected for audit. The department will randomly select a number of license renewals for audit each month. If selected for an audit, you will be notified when you receive your renewal notice.
You will be required to submit a copy of your current certification issued by the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA website) or, if not certified, copies of certificates, transcripts or other documentation to verify attendance, participation and completion of continuing education requirements. Your license will not be renewed until continuing education requirements have been met.
You will be responsible for maintaining records of your continuing education experiences or certificates for a period of 2 years.
