Dyslexia Therapists and Practitioners Exam Information

Exemption from Exam Requirement

Academic Language Therapists certified by the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) are exempt from the Therapist Level examination.

Academic Language Practitioners certified by the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) are exempt from the Practitioner Level examination.

A copy of a current ALTA certification will serve as evidence of exemption from meeting this requirement.


Exam Eligibility

After submitting an application to TDLR for initial licensure, you will be sent notification from ALTA confirming that you have met all examination eligibility requirements. The notification will have specific time and site information as well as a National Registration Exam Guide.


Exam Types

The exams utilize paper and pencil Scantrons. Exams are not timed, but typically take 2-3 hours to complete.

Dyslexia Therapists

The written theory examination for dyslexia therapists will continue to be the Alliance National Registration Examination, Therapist Level administered by The Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA).

The exam is 75 multiple choice questions.

Dyslexia Practitioners

The written theory examination for dyslexia practitioners will continue to be the Alliance National Registration Examination, Practitioner Level administered by The Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA).


Fees

The application fee for the exam is $125, payable directly to ALTA.

After passing the exam, you will immediately be eligible for ALTA membership as a Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP) or Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT), depending upon which exam was taken. If you elect this option, there will be an additional fee for membership.


Required Materials

You will be required to present photo identification to proctors at the examination site. If you do not have a photo ID, you will not be allowed to take the exam.

Also bring with you #2 pencils and a printed copy of your exam registration confirmation letter.


Re-Scheduling an Exam

If you are unable to take your exam on the scheduled date, you will need to contact ALTA and inform them of your cancellation no later than 72 hours after the exam date for your fee to be applied to the next exam.

Exam Results

You must score at least an 80 on the exam to pass. If taking the practitioner exam, you cannot miss more than 10 questions. If taking the therapy exam, you may not miss more than 15 questions.

After taking the exam, you will be informed in writing by the Exam Committee of your examination results. Please allow 2-6 weeks for your test results to arrive. You will receive an email stating that you passed or failed at the email address you listed on your application. ALTA does not give out grades, only pass/fail.

All candidates who pass the exam will receive a certificate acknowledging the successful completion of the exam.


Re-Taking the Exam

If you fail the examination, you may apply for the next scheduled examination.
