Apply for a New Dyslexia Therapist License
On this page:
A licensed dyslexia therapist may practice in a school, learning center, clinic, or private practice setting.
To be eligible for a dyslexia therapist license, you must hold at least a master's degree from an accredited public or private institution of higher education.
You will be exempt from providing an official transcript, if you can provide proof of current certification as an Academic Language Therapist, issued by the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA). Please include with your application materials a copy of your current ALTA certification as evidence of meeting this requirement.
Training Program Completion
You must complete an accredited multisensory structured language education training program to meet the training qualifications for a dyslexia therapist license.
Proof of Completion
If you are not currently certified by ALTA, you must submit proof of successful completion of an approved training program accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) that includes, at a minimum:
- 200 hours of course work in multisensory structured language education
- 700 hours of supervised clinical experience in multisensory structured language education
- 10 demonstration lessons of the practice of multisensory structured language education, each observed by an instructor
You should include copies of the certificate(s) and/or letter(s) showing the number of completed coursework hours, supervised clinical hours, and demonstration lessons from your International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) accredited training program. If the certificates do not show the specific number of completed hours and/or demonstration lessons, you must submit a letter from the training program outlining these requirements.
Application and Fee
To apply for a dyslexia therapist license, submit a completed application form (Apply Online or see Dyslexia Therapist and Dyslexia Practitioner Application PDF) along with the associated fee of $150.
Before a license may be issued, all applicants must pass the ALTA Competency Examination for MSLE, Therapist Level.
ALTA Competency Exam
The ALTA Competency Exam is the examination applicants must pass to qualify for licensure. If you do not hold a current certification with ALTA, you must contact ALTA for instructions to register for the exam.
For more information, please see the exam information page.
Applicants with Criminal Convictions
Please see the Guidelines for License Applicants with Criminal Convictions, which describe the process by which TDLR determines whether a criminal conviction renders an applicant an unsuitable candidate for the license, or whether a conviction warrants revocation or suspension of a license previously granted.
You will need to provide information on all felony and/or misdemeanor offenses. You will need to provide information if you have ever been arrested, charged, convicted, entered a plea of nolo contendere (no contest), a plea of guilty, and/or received deferred adjudication for a felony or misdemeanor.
