Fingerprinting Instructions for New Applicants
On this page:
If you have a criminal history, you must complete and send TDLR a Criminal History Questionnaire Form (PDF) as part of your license application or renewal materials.
Why Must I Submit Fingerprints?
A Texas law enacted in 2019 requires all massage therapists, massage instructors, and massage establishment licensees to submit fingerprints to be used by TDLR to obtain an applicant’s criminal conviction history.
This is a one-time requirement that must be completed before your license can be issued.
After you submit a license application to TDLR, you will receive an email from TDLR directing you how to schedule an appointment.
Do not attempt to schedule your fingerprinting appointment until you have received from TDLR the email with instructions.
How Do I Get Fingerprinted?
Step 1: Schedule an Appointment
After you submit a license application to TDLR, you will receive an email from TDLR directing you to schedule an appointment for fingerprinting.
Your email will include your TDLR entity number in the top right portion of the document. You will need this number when submitting your IdentoGO receipt in Step 3 (below).
Step 2: Get Fingerprinted
Be sure to arrive at your fingerprint appointment at least 10 minutes early.
- Bring your valid photo ID*
- * Note: An unexpired driver’s license is one acceptable form of ID.
Also see: Other acceptable ways to prove your identity (PDF).
- Bring the required payment of $39.05.
- IdentoGO accepts credit cards, business checks, money orders and coupon codes (employer accounts).
- IdentoGO does not accept personal checks or cash.
- IdentoGO will submit your digital fingerprints to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) electronically.
Step 3: Send a Copy of Your Receipt to TDLR
Please upload an image (JPG, PNG, or PDF file) of your fingerprinting receipt as soon as possible after you are fingerprinted, so that your license can be issued.
For faster processing, please include your TDLR entity number when sending your receipt.
Your license application is not complete until TDLR receives a copy of your receipt.
If you are unable to upload your receipt, you may send a copy by mail to:
TDLR Massage Fingerprints
PO Box 12157
Austin TX 78711
If you choose to send your receipt by mail, please keep a copy for yourself in case the original is lost or does not arrive at TDLR.
Step 4: Criminal History Review
TDLR will begin your criminal history review after you have been fingerprinted. You can login to your IdentoGO account to determine when your fingerprint results have been made available to TDLR. We will need additional time to review your results once they are made available to us.
The criminal history review process can take between one to six weeks for processing and review. If you have a criminal history, you must complete and attach a Criminal History Questionnaire Form (PDF). You may do this at the time you submit your online application by downloading the pdf which is fillable and then submitting it as an attachment prior to completing your payment for the application. If you need to submit the Criminal History Questionnaire after the initial application, please submit it by secure email.
What Happens Next?
If the fingerprint search shows you do not have a criminal history, or if you are found to have a criminal history that is not disqualifying in nature, and all other requirements for the license have been met, then your license will be issued and sent to you via USPS mail.
You should receive the license within 7-10 business days after it is issued. You will be able to view your license information from our site using your first and last name.
TDLR will be notified of any arrests or criminal convictions that might occur after you are fingerprinted.
