Continuing Education for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology
To renew and maintain continuous licensure, you must complete all continuing education requirements prior to the expiration of your license. Any continuing education that is required as part of your renewal application must be completed prior to your license expiration date to avoid payment of a late renewal fee.
Continuing Education Requirements
A continuing education unit is the basic unit of measurement used to credit individuals with continuing education activities for licensure. One continuing education units is defined as 10 clock hours of participation in an approved continuing education experience.
Speech-Language Pathology License
Speech-language pathologists are required to obtain 20 clock hours of continuing education (2 continuing education units), with 2 clock hours (0.2 continuing education units) in ethics.
Intern In Speech-Language Pathology License
An intern in speech-language pathology is required to obtain 10 clock hours of continuing education (1 continuing education units), with 1 clock hour (0.1 continuing education units) in ethics.
Assistant In Speech-Language Pathology License
An assistant in speech-language pathology is required to obtain 20 clock hours of continuing education (2 continuing education units), with 2 clock hours (0.2 continuing education units) in ethics.
Audiology License
An audiologist is required to obtain 20 clock hours of continuing education (2 continuing education units), with 2 clock hours (0.2 continuing education units) in ethics.
Intern in Audiology
The intern in audiology license is exempt from the continuing professional education requirements.
Assistant In Audiology License
An assistant in audiology is required to obtain 20 clock hours of continuing education (2 continuing education units), with 2 clock hours (0.2 continuing education units) in ethics.
Dual License In Speech-Language Pathology And Audiology
An individual holding dual licenses in speech-language pathology and audiology must obtain 30 clock hours of continuing education (3 continuing education units), with 2 clock hours (0.2 continuing education units) in ethics.
Approved Providers
Continuing education courses must be offered by a provider with approval from one of the following associations:
Rollover Hours
Earned continuing education hours exceeding the minimum requirement in a previous renewal period shall first be applied to the continuing education requirement for the current renewal period.
- A maximum of 10 additional clock hours may be accrued during a license period to be applied to the next consecutive renewal period. Two of the 10 additional clock hours of the rollover hours may be in ethics.
- A maximum of 15 additional clock hours may be accrued by dual speech-language pathology and audiology licensees during a license period to be applied to the next consecutive renewal period.
Continuing Education Audit System
The Department selects a random sample of license renewals each month for auditing. If selected for an audit, the licensee will be notified when they receive their renewal notice. The licensee will then be required to submit copies of certificates, transcripts or other documentation to verify the licensee's attendance, participation and completion of continuing education requirements. Licenses will not be renewed until continuing education requirements have been met.
Record Keeping
You are responsible for maintaining a record of your continuing education experiences for at least 3 years.
