After October 3, 2016, the requirements will remain the same for the renewal of speech-language pathology or audiology licenses.

  • Please note: Interns in audiology do not earn continuing education credit during their internship, they are exempt from the continuing education requirements.

To renew a speech-language pathology or audiology license, a licensee must complete the following required hours of continuing education:

  • License issued for a 2-year term - 20 clock hours or 2 CEUs with 2 clock hours or .2 CEUs in ethics.
  • Dual license in speech-language pathology and audiology issued for a 2-year term - 30 clock hours or 3 CEUs with 2 clock hours or .2 CEUs in ethics.
  • Intern in speech-language pathology license issued for a 1-year term - 10 clock hours or 1 CEU with 1 clock hour or .1 CEU in ethics.

The licensee is responsible for maintaining a record of his or her continuing education experiences for at least 3 years. If a licensee is selected for audit, then the licensee will be notified and records will be required to be submitted to the Department. All continuing education courses must be provided by a TDLR approved CE Sponsor.

One CEU is defined as 10 clock hours of participation in an approved continuing education experience.

5. What happens to the earned continuing education hours which exceed the minimum requirements for my current renewal period?

Earned continuing education hours which exceed the minimum requirements for a current renewal period may be applied to your next consecutive renewal period. A maximum of 10 additional clock hours may be accrued during a license period to be applied to the next consecutive renewal period and 2 of the clock hours may be in ethics. A maximum 15 additional clock hours may be accrued by a dual speech-language pathology and audiology licensee during a license period to be applied to the next consecutive renewal period.

6. What type of courses will be acceptable for credit as continuing education?

All continuing education courses must be provided by a TDLR approved CE Sponsor. The following sponsors are approved to offer continuing education:

  • American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
  • Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association (TSHA)
  • American Academy of Audiology (AAA)
  • Texas Academy of Audiology (TAA)

7. How does the audit process work for continuing education?

The Department shall select a random sample of license holders for each renewal month. If selected for an audit, the licensee will be notified when they receive their renewal notice. The licensee will be required to submit copies of certificates, transcripts or other documentation to verify the licensee's attendance, participation and completion of continuing education requirements. Licenses will not be renewed until continuing education requirements have been met.
