Required Facilities and Equipment for Schools
Requirements for All Schools
Per sections 83.72(u) and 83.23 of the Barbering and Cosmetology Administrative Rules, schools must have the following:
Facility Requirements
- Classroom(s) separated from the laboratory area by walls extending to the ceiling
- Adequate space to properly instruct the number of students enrolled
- A sink with hot and cold running water and secure space for storage and dispensing of supplies and equipment
There are no set requirements for the square footage of a school, number of chairs, or number of sinks that schools must have. A school must have and maintain adequate space, equipment, and instructional materials to provide classroom training to the number of students enrolled.
Equipment
- Day/date formatted computer time clock (if using a time clock to track student hours)
- Desks and chairs or table space for each student in attendance
- Multi-media (audio/visual) equipment
- Suitable receptacle for used towels/linens
- Covered trash cans in lab area
- Wet disinfectant soaking container, large enough to fully immerse tools and implements
Equipment that is made available to students must be in good working condition, be of adequate design to allow for effective instruction, and be sufficient for the student to perform the services associated with the curriculum.

Schools must display in a conspicuous place clearly visible to the public:
Laws and Rules Book
Per section 83.23 of the Barbering and Cosmetology Administrative Rules, schools must obtain a copy of the current Barbering and Cosmetology Law and Rules Book. The fee for each copy is $14. This book must be available for reference in your place of business at all times.
You must comply with all applicable laws and rules, paying special note to the health and safety requirements and the responsibilities of schools.
Class A Barber or Cosmetology Operator Curriculum
For schools offering Class A Barber or Cosmetology Operator curriculum, the following equipment must be available in adequate number for student use:
- Shampoo bowl and shampoo chair
- Hair drying equipment or professional hand-held hair dryers
- Cold wave rods
- Thermal iron (electric or non-electric)
- Styling station covered with a non-porous material that can be cleaned and disinfected, with mirror, and chair (swivel or hydraulic)
- Mannequin with sufficient hair
- Professional hand clippers
- Manicure station and stool
- Facial bed or a chair that reclines
- Dry sanitizer
- Wet disinfectant soaking containers, large enough to fully immerse tools and implements
Esthetician Curriculum
For schools offering esthetician curriculum, the following equipment must be available in adequate number for student use:
- Facial bed or a chair that reclines
- Lighted magnifying glass
- Woods lamp
- Dry sanitizer
- Steamer machine
- Brush machine for cleaning
- Vacuum machine
- High frequency machine for disinfection, product penetration, stimulation
- Galvanic machine for eliminating encrustations, product penetration
- Mannequin head
- Paraffin bath and paraffin wax
- Wet disinfectant soaking containers, large enough to fully immerse tools and implements
If offering dual esthetician-manicurist curriculum, the equipment required for the esthetician curriculum and the equipment for the manicure curriculum must be in the school including a wax warmer and paraffin warmer for each service, in adequate number for student use.
Manicurist Curriculum
For schools offering manicurist curriculum, the following equipment must be available in adequate number for student use:
- Autoclave, dry-heat sterilizer or ultra-violet sanitizer
- Manicure station with sufficient lighting
- Client chair
- Student stool or chair
- Whirlpool foot spa or foot basin - see cleaning information
- Electric nail file
- UV light curing system
- Paraffin bath and paraffin wax
- Wet disinfectant soaking containers, large enough to fully immerse tools and implements
If offering dual esthetician-manicurist curriculum, the equipment required for the esthetician curriculum and the equipment for the manicure curriculum must be in the school including a wax warmer and paraffin warmer for each service, in adequate number for student use.
Eyelash Extension Curriculum
For schools offering eyelash extension curriculum, the following equipment must be available in adequate number for student use:
- Facial bed, facial chair or massage table that allows the consumer to lie completely flat
- Stool or chair
- Lamp
- Mannequin head
- Wet disinfectant soaking containers, large enough to fully immerse tools and implements
- Dry sanitizer
