Required Equipment for Cosmetology Salons

Requirements for All Salons
In addition to complying with the general health and safety requirements, salons of all types must have the following:
Facility Requirements

Flooring that is non-porous or absorbent in all areas where cosmetology services are offered
- includes restrooms and areas where chemicals are mixed or where water may splash
- anti-slip floor coverings are exempt from this requirement
- Sink with hot and cold running water

At least one restroom located on or near the premises of the establishment
- For public safety, chemical supplies may not be stored in the restroom.
Equipment
- A suitable receptacle for used towels/linen
- A wet disinfectant soaking container, large enough to fully immerse tools and implements
- A clean, dry, debris-free storage area
- At least one covered trash container
- Adequate ventilation, air filtration, and input of fresh air to keep chemical fumes away from the public area
- If providing manicure or pedicure nail services, an autoclave, dry heat sterilizer or ultraviolet sanitizer
Signage
Cosmetology schools must display in a conspicuous place clearly visible to the public:
- A sign with the salon name
- The most recent inspection report issued by the department
- Human trafficking information sign (PDF)
Laws and Rules Book
Per section 83.22 of the Cosmetology Administrative Rules, beauty salons and shops must obtain a copy of the current Cosmetology Laws and Rules Book. The fee for each copy is $14. This book must be available for reference in your place of business at all times.
You must comply with all applicable cosmetology and/or barbering laws and rules, paying special note to the health and safety requirements and the Responsibilities of Beauty Salons, Mini-Salons, Specialty Salons, Dual Shops, Mini-Dual Shops and Booth Rentals.
Salons and Mini-Salons
Salons and mini-salons must provide the following equipment for each cosmetology license holder present who provides services:
- Working station
- Styling chair
- Shampoo bowls in a sufficient quantity
Manicure Salons
Manicure salons must provide the following equipment for each licensee present and providing services:
- Manicure table with light
- Manicure stool
- Professional client chair for each manicure station
- Autoclave, dry heat sterilizer, or ultraviolet sanitizer
Esthetician Salons
Esthetician salons must provide the following equipment for each licensee present and providing services:
- Facial bed or chair
- Mirror
Combination Esthetician/Manicure Salons
Combination esthetician/manicure salons must provide the following equipment:
- Manicure table with light
- Manicure stool
- Professional client chair for each manicure station
- Autoclave, dry heat sterilizer, or ultraviolet sanitizer
- Manicure table with light
- Manicure stool
- Professional client chair for each manicure station
Eyelash Extension Salon
Eyelash extension salons must provide the following equipment for each licensee present and providing services:
- Facial bed or massage table that allows the consumer to lie completely flat
- Lamp
- Stool or chair
Hair Weaving Salons
Hair weaving salons shall provide the following equipment for each licensee present and providing services:
- Work station
- Styling chair
- Shampoo bowls in a sufficient quantity to provide hair weaving services
