Renew a Driver Education Provider License
For information about branch locations, please see Renewing a Branch Location License
Surety Bond Continuation
You must provide a bond continuation agreement for your $10,000 surety bond that was established when you first applied for your license. The bond continuation must be effective on the first day that the renewed license will be effective.
The bond must remain in effect until your provider license is no longer active. You must submit a bond continuation agreement with each subsequent renewal.
Bond requirements can be found in Education Code 1001.207 and section 84.40(b) of the administrative rules.
The information on the bond must match the information of the provider license, including:
- the exact name of the provider
- legal ownership name
- physical provider address
- effective date and expiration date on the bond must correspond with the term of the provider’s license date
The bond continuation information must be entered when you complete your online renewal.
Application and Fee
To begin your renewal, submit a completed online renewal form and include the non-refundable application fee of $100.

During the renewal transaction, you may not add a new endorsement to your license, this is considered a new transaction. You must first complete the renewal process, once the transaction is complete. You can log back in and complete the “Add Endorsement” transaction.
For assistance with using the Versa system to add endorsements, please see the step-by-step endorsement guide (PDF).
Curriculum Requirements
The courses that you will offer to students must meet the minimum established curriculum requirements.
For more information on what types of curriculum you can offer under your license, see Curriculum Standards for Driver Education Providers.
Renewal of Expired Licenses
You may not operate a driver education school if your license has expired.
A license that has been expired for 90 days or less may be renewed by paying to the department a renewal fee that is equal to 1-1/2 times the normally required renewal fee.
A license that has been expired for more than 90 days but less than 18 months may be renewed by paying to the department a renewal fee that is equal to two times the normally required renewal fee.
On approval by the executive director (see Request to Executive Director for Expired License Renewal Form PDF), a license that has been expired for at least 18 months but less than three years may be renewed by paying to the department a renewal fee equal to two times the normally required renewal fee.
Applicants with Criminal Convictions
TDLR will conduct a criminal history background check on each owner of your company.
If any owner has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor (other than a minor traffic violation) or pleaded guilty or no contest (resulting in a deferred adjudication) to any in-state, out-of-state or federal criminal offense, you must provide a completed Criminal History Questionnaire (PDF) along with your application materials.
Criminal convictions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Licenses may be denied based on the nature of the conviction and how long prior to the application the conviction occurred. Depending on your criminal history, a review can take from one to six weeks to complete.
Individuals may request TDLR review their criminal background before actually applying for a license. TDLR uses the same process for this pre-application evaluation as the process described below. See the Criminal History Evaluation Letter page for more information.
Please see the Guidelines for License Applicants with Criminal Convictions, which describe the process that TDLR uses to determine whether a criminal conviction renders an applicant an unsuitable candidate for the license, or whether a conviction warrants revocation or suspension of a license previously granted.
